The Croatian checkerboard, known in Croatian as the "šahovnica", is a prominent national symbol of Croatia. It holds significant historical, cultural, and symbolic value, appearing in the country's coat of arms, flag, and various other national emblems. 

The red and white colors are traditional Croatian colors, symbolizing bravery, strength, and peace. The squares alternate in color, but the exact sequence and number of squares can vary slightly depending on the specific representation. In the national coat of arms, the pattern is more stylized to fit the emblem's design.

The checkerboard pattern has been associated with Croatian heraldry since at least the 9th century. It is believed to have originated as a coat of arms for Croatian nobility.

The šahovnica was officially adopted as part of the Croatian coat of arms in the 19th century during the national revival movement. It has since become a central element of Croatian national identity.
